Let's be brutally truthful here, asian standards of beauty still value fairness. We see skin bleaching products on television, on social media and in stores everyday. It has become such a staple in our asian skincare routine.
My take on whitening products is, however, to avoid them. Why so? The truth is, many of these products are effective because they contain some version of bleach. The end result: these products dry out your skin and cause sensitive skin.

So how do I achieve fair skin without these products? The answer is simple: SPF, vitamin C and actively avoiding the sun.
Years ago, I was part of the cross-country team in my secondary school, and we had 3 trainings per week under hot, hot Singapore sun. This meant that I was tan. In the years after, I unintentionally became fairer. How did I do so?
Since 16, I realised the importance of SPF, it prevents becoming tan and sun damage, including freckles. I personally use the ANESSA sunscreen, as it is relatively affordable and is very lightweight and moisturising. I apply it every morning even when I do not go outdoors, to prevent sun damage from windows. (If you got out for long hours, bringing a spray can of sunscreen and re-applying every 2 hours will help prevent UV damage.)

I believe in eating to help my skin, and one fruit I recommend for brightening would be the kiwi fruit. Kiwi is a super-fruit when it comes to skincare, as it is packed with vitamins and minerals. Plus, it is super yummy.

Lastly, I do not go out that often in the sun. If you go out often, find shaded areas so that you can avoid the sun as much as possible, and if you feel extra, bring an umbrella out.
Do not feel pressured about becoming fair, all skin colours are beautiful. This article is just meant to help those who want to achieve fairer skin naturally.
Enjoy!
